India gained its independence on 15 August 1947, after which the process of preparing a constitution was started. The Constitution was passed on 26 November 1949 in the Constituent Assembly. It was adopted on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system.

Why do we celebrate Republic Day?
Many people throughout India celebrate the nation's Republic Day, which is a gazetted holiday on January 26 each year. It is a day to remember when India's constitution came into force on January 26, 1950, completing the country's transition toward becoming an independent republic.

What is the difference between independence and Republic Day?
India got independence from British rule in 1947, but was not a republic till 1950,, until when the constitution of the country was adopted and the country was declared a Republic. ... It was only when India adopted its newly written constitution on 26th January 1950 that India became a Republic

Why was the date of 26th of January selected for Republic Day celebrations?
The Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950. ... 26 January was chosen as the Republic day because it was on this day in 1930 when Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress as opposed to the Dominion status offered by British Regime.
